A vintage Cherokee purse basket with original original tag. Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual Inc. of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The tag describes this as a purse basket made by Betty Lossiah using maple with walnut and bloodroot dyes.
This basket is in excellent vintage condition. The colors are vibrant. The inside is lined with a brown and white polka dot fabric.
The basket measures 9" X 7" X 6.5" with the carved handles adding another 5" to the height.
My research revealed that Ms. Lossiah lived a long life to age 99. She passed down her art, knowledge, and skills to family members, one of whom is Lucille Lossiah, her granddaughter, an accomplished basketmaker and teacher.
This is a beautiful basket in very nice vintage condition.
